Anti-Borrelia Liquor Alegria Monotest

The Anti-Borrelia Liqour Tests für Alegria are ELISA based test systems intended for the comparative quantitative measurement of IgG or IgM class antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in in human serum or plasma samples and in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The assays supports the detection of specific antibody synthesis in the central nervous system.

Borrelia burgdorferi is a gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium from the family of spirochetes. There are at least 15 genospecies, of these mainly B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), B. afzelii and B. garinii are important as the causative organisms of Lyme disease. The group as a whole is referred to as B. burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.).

Neuroborreliosis is a disease that may develop when the bacteria cross the blood-brain barrier and infect the nervous system. Diagnosis of neuroborreliosis is based on the patient’s medical history, clinical findings and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid. A comprehensive CSF profil includes calculation of the specific anti-Borrelia antibody index (AI) as an evidence for Borrelia specific intrathecal antibody production. Calculation of AI is based on the determination of anti-Borrelia antibodies in a CSF sample and a corresponding serum sample from the same patient. The detection of an elevated Borrelia antibody index remains the main confirmatory tool in neuroborreliosis diagnostics.

In these assays, recombinant highly specific immunodominant antigens of the three major human pathogenic Borrelia species are used as coating antigens. This leads to improved sensitivity and specificity of the ORGENTEC Anti-Borrelia Liquor ELISAs compared to tests based on purified antigens from cultivated bacteria.
