Frequently asked questions
Why is 121 °C the standard autoclave temperature?
At about 15 psi of saturated steam, 121 °C destroys vegetative bacteria and resistant spores within a validated hold time — typically 15–30 minutes depending on the load. Dense loads and large liquid volumes need longer, because the core of the load lags well behind chamber temperature. BioClave models also offer a 134 °C setting for shorter cycles.
What is the difference between a liquid cycle and a solid (gravity) cycle?
A liquid cycle exhausts the chamber slowly so superheated media and buffers cool under pressure instead of boiling over; running liquids on a fast-exhaust dry-goods cycle makes them erupt and lose volume. BioClave autoclaves ship with preset programs for liquids, wrapped instruments, and unwrapped instruments or plasticware.
What size benchtop autoclave should a lab choose?
Size the chamber to the tallest and widest vessel you sterilize, not just to total volume. The BioClave line spans 8 L (Mini), 18 L, and 28 L — the 28 L chamber accepts 1 and 2 liter flasks and bottles, while the Mini fits crowded benches. An optional thermal printer or USB logging covers labs that must document every cycle.
Who supplies Benchmark autoclaves in Israel?
