Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an analytical balance and a precision balance?
Readability. Analytical balances resolve 0.1 mg (some 0.01 mg) and include a draft shield for milligram-level work; precision balances read 1 mg to 0.1 g, offer larger capacities, and tolerate busier environments. Match the class to the smallest quantity you routinely weigh, not the largest.
What does balance readability mean, and how fine do I need it?
Readability is the smallest increment the display can show — it is not the same as accuracy. As a working rule, pick readability roughly ten times finer than the tolerance of your most demanding weighing, so measurement uncertainty stays a small fraction of the allowed error.
Is internal or external calibration better?
Internal calibration uses a motorized reference weight to correct temperature drift automatically — convenient and operator-independent. External calibration with certified weights delivers the most auditable traceability. Regulated labs typically combine internal adjustment with scheduled external verification.
Why does an analytical balance need a draft shield and a stable bench?
At 0.1 mg resolution, air currents, vibration, temperature gradients, and even static charge register as weight. A closed draft shield, a dedicated weighing table, and placement away from HVAC vents and doorways matter as much as anything on the specification sheet.
