SIRscan Discs ID Optochin 5 µg - For the identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Filter paper discs impregnated with 5 µg optochin (ethylhydrocuprein hydrochloride). Each disc is printed with the code OP 5 on both sides.

Most strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae are sensitive to optochin (ethylhydrocuprein hydrochloride), which differentiates them from the Streptococcus viridans group: a zone of inhibition around the disc on a heavily inoculated blood agar plate indicates pneumococci. The disc can also be placed on a primary culture from sputum or pus to indicate the presence of pneumococci.
