Frequently asked questions
Should I use a 0.2 µm or 0.45 µm filter?
Use 0.45 µm for particulate removal — clarifying samples, mobile phases, and buffers where sterility is not required. Use 0.2/0.22 µm when you need to remove bacteria: cell culture media, protein solutions, and anything that must stay sterile. Sterilizing-grade filters are validated by retaining Brevundimonas diminuta, a bacterium small enough to pass a 0.45 µm membrane.
How do I choose a syringe filter membrane?
Match the membrane to the sample. Whatman Puradisc filters come in regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, nylon, PTFE, PES, and PVDF: PES and PVDF offer low protein binding for biological samples, hydrophobic PTFE suits aggressive organic solvents, nylon is a general-purpose choice for mixed aqueous-organic samples, and regenerated cellulose covers both solvent types with low binding. Then pick the diameter for your volume — Puradisc handles routine samples up to 100 mL.
What are Whatman glass microfiber grades like GF/A, GF/C, and GF/F used for?
These binder-free depth filters capture fine particles at high flow rates and tolerate organic solvents and most acids. Grade GF/A (1.6 µm nominal retention) is the workhorse for water and air monitoring; GF/C is the standard for total suspended solids testing; GF/F combines fine retention with very high loading capacity. Note they retain nominally, by depth — for absolute retention you need a membrane.
Are Whatman filters still made — who owns Whatman now?
Whatman is the lab filtration brand of Cytiva, and the papers, glass microfiber grades, and Puradisc syringe filters continue under the Whatman name. In Israel the range is carried by Danyel Biotech alongside the rest of the Cytiva portfolio.
What are ULTA capsule filters used for in bioprocessing?
Cytiva's ULTA single-use capsules cover normal-flow filtration from prefiltration and clarification through bioburden reduction to sterile filtration of buffers, media, and bioreactor harvest. ULTA Pure SG is the sterilizing-grade PES option, available gamma-sterilized in ReadyToProcess formats from 2 to 30 inches, and capsules can terminate in ReadyMate aseptic connectors for single-use flow paths.
Who supplies Whatman and Cytiva filtration products in Israel?
From Puradisc syringe filters to ULTA process capsules, the Cytiva filtration portfolio is stocked locally by Danyel Biotech, its official Israeli distributor — with technical help matching membranes to samples. A quote is one click away on this page.
