Frequently asked questions
Should I use spin columns or magnetic beads for DNA extraction?
Spin columns (like Omega's E.Z.N.A. kits) are fast and simple for smaller batches processed by hand. Magnetic beads (Mag-Bind, sbeadex) need no centrifuge, scale to 96-well plates, and are the format of choice for automation and for low-input or fragmented samples such as cfDNA.
What A260/280 and A260/230 ratios indicate pure DNA or RNA?
A260/280 of ~1.8 for DNA and ~2.0 for RNA indicates minimal protein carryover. A260/230 of roughly 2.0–2.2 indicates the sample is free of salts, guanidine, and organic carryover. Low 260/230 usually means wash steps need repeating.
Which extraction kit fits my sample type?
Sample type is the first selection criterion: blood and tissue kits differ from plant kits (which must handle polysaccharides and polyphenols), soil and stool kits add inhibitor removal, and FFPE kits reverse formalin crosslinking. Omega and LGC both offer sample-type-specific chemistries.
Can I automate DNA/RNA extraction?
Yes — magnetic-bead kits are designed for it. LGC's sbeadex runs on open platforms such as KingFisher, Hamilton, and Tecan, and on the dedicated oKtopure system that processes eight 96-well plates per run. Omega's Mag-Bind kits similarly support automated workflows.
How do I prevent RNA degradation during isolation?
Control RNases: wear gloves, use RNase-free plastics and water, lyse samples quickly in guanidine-based buffer, and keep samples cold. Choosing an RNA isolation kit with effective RNase inactivation at lysis is the single biggest factor.
Who supplies DNA and RNA extraction kits in Israel?
Danyel Biotech is the official Israeli distributor of Omega Bio-tek and LGC Biosearch Technologies, with local stock, technical support, and fast quotes for manual and automated extraction workflows.
